Heterogeneous catalysis remains the backbone of large-tonnage petrochemical synthesis, from reforming and isomerization to selective hydrogenation. In recent years attention has shifted from the search for new active phases towards control over the support structure and the distribution of the active component across its surface.
Supports and their role
Alumina, silica and zeolites give fundamentally different surface acidity and therefore different selectivity. Modifying the support with rare earth elements reduces the share of side cracking reactions without any loss of activity.
Resistance to poisoning
The main poisons of industrial catalysts are sulfur and chlorine compounds present in the feedstock. The practical conclusion for laboratories: controlling impurities in the starting monomers and solvents costs less than regenerating the catalyst afterwards.
